The Monument in Shappell Park was dedicated on May 10, 1906. The May 10, 1906 issue of Easton, Pennsylvania's newspaper, The Easton Express reports about the dedication ceremonies and the ten year process leading up to the dedication. The newspaper reports: planning and fund raising began in 1896, the granite monument is 147 feet 6 inches tall, the sailor on top of the monument is 7 feet 4 inches tall, the monument cost the citizens of Phillipsburg, New Jersey $4,800.00, most of that funding was raised during a thirteen day fair that took place May 8, 1905 through May 20, 1905.
